Seems common where simple approaches are more effective or easily interpreted than complex mathematical models! Or at least good enough not to warrant them.
My wife and I tested it when we had a lightning over the PDX Metro last month. It was amazing to see a cloud to cloud discharge and then it appear on the map with only a short lag. A very fascinating and versatile resource!

Takes a little experimentation to optimize. Right now the Gulf with those tropical storms is showing a lot of activity as would be expected.
